Mythology: Fact or fiction

In any culture you will find the same creatures–even if they’re called by different names. There’s my lovely dragons, but also vampires and shapeshifters.

No one has ever been able to explain how primitive civilizations the world over believed in the same creatures. Came up with the same legends.

Yet no one has ever found proof that any of these creatures exist.

Which leaves us with only belief or disbelief.

I think it’s amusing how the more technologically advanced a society gets, the further they drift from the foundational beliefs. Oh, we have science now. Magic can’t possibly exist. It never did.

Yet, I know witches, Wiccans and druids.

They believe in magic. They believe in the creatures of the night and the creatures of the sky.

Native beliefs still hold that every living creature is part of the earth, and the magic of the earth.

Is one right and the other wrong?

Q4U: Is there a way for magic and technology to co-exist?

Dragons or Dinosaurs?

Could dragons have existed? We know Dinos did because we have proof. We have their skeletons, their footprints, their eggs.

No one has found a fossil and said, “Yup, this one’s a dragon.”

Why not? Did they never exist except for in the minds of people?

I don’t think so.

Then again, I am a writer J

There’s a movie from Discovery titled Dragons. In it, they ‘find’ the frozen remains of a dragon. Through the show, as they ‘examine’ these remains, they talk about different areas of the myths: flying, breathing fire, ect. and talk about the physiology of the creature and how such things could have been possible.

It’s a great movie. Go watch it.

But the overall conclusion of the show is that dragons could have existed. They could have flown (bird-like light bones and large wings). They could have breathed fire (two chambered lungs and throat, eating magnesium).

And yet, no one had ever found one.

That, is the magic of it all.

Q4U: Do you think it’s possible dragons existed/exist?

Blogging Overload

With all this new workload between being published and school and everything else, I’ve been slacking on blogs.

I’ve decided a course of action.

My two group blogs, Plot Mamas and the 7 Evil Dwarves, I only have to post once a week.

Between Higley Browne and Amber Kallyn, I can’t possibly blog every day on both. I’m not quite that creative. Nor do I have the time.

I thought about letting my Higley Browne blog go on hiatus.

Maybe I still will.

But for now, I’m going to try this:

I’ll blog on Amber Kallyn M-W-F.

Higley Browne on Tu-Th.

We’ll see if this works out.

But, just so you know, blogs won’t be going up every day on both.

Q4U: How do you find time to blog? What type of schedule works for you?

Here be dragons

I love dragons. Their shape and size. The mythology surrounding them. The magic of such a creature.

I write dragons. My upcoming release Dragos: Burned, is about a dragon falling in love with… a fireman. What else? LOL.

Dragons are everywhere, in every culture around the world from Europe to Asia to Mexico. It amazes me that all these cultures came up with such close mythos back when they didn’t even know each other existed, much less had the ability to communicate.

I figure there’s only one way this could have happened.

Dragons were real. Right?

Q4U: What’s your favorite mythological creature?

No #fail, only #Succeed

I posted yesterday at Plot Mamas about the ups and downs of life.

There’s a country song, can’t think of the name this second due to sleep deprivation, but there’s a line that goes “Sometimes you’re the windsheild, sometimes you’re the bug.”

I love that song. It’s just so apt, and can be used for any aspect of life.

From plotting, to writing, to editing, to submitting, to rejections, to…

Well, to finally getting that very first offer.

You heard me right, folks.

Someone out there is crazy enough to actually pay me for my writing. They’re going to publish me.

Me. (Well, Amber Kallyn, anyway)

Yeah, it’s still feeling a little dreamlike.

And yeah, I’m still pinching myself every once in a while.

Give me a few days, and I’ll lay it all out. My experience up till now.

But, for now,

Who is Amber Kallyn?

Hmm…

Well that would be me too.

You see, I decided to have a pen name for my Erotic Paranormal Romances, so that those only wanting to read my Urban Fantasy would be able to keep them straight. No secret though, just for reader preferences.

Of course, I hope ya’ll want to read them both 🙂

See my blog: http://amberkallyn.wordpress.com/

The blog will be updated with Erotica news, while this blog will be about me and my Urban Fantasy news 🙂

***Warning: some cross posting may occur.

How do you know when?

Submitting :

How do you know when you’re ready?

I think that’s been my biggest question for a while. See, I have this fantastic critique group, and they like what I write.

They crit my novels, query letters and synopsi.

And they really like it. (Of course, what makes them really great is they still mark my pages in bloody-red pen to point out holes and other issues 🙂

So, as a writer, what do I do?

Well, I start submitting of course.

Only to get form rejection after another.

Now, the people in my writing group submit in our own style. Personally, I have a list of agents and I send my query (and sample pages if guidelines request) to about 8-12 agents at a time.

I’ve heard a lot of people say to send in small batches, so you don’t burn bridges.

Then, when I get nothing but form rejections, I go back to the drawing board and tweak my query.

I’ve finally gotten to the point that my query has garnered me some requests. Most have come back as rejections (I know what that means, work on the pages). But, I’ve gotten a few full requests for my Urban Fantasy that are out right now.

OKAY, EVERYONE–cross your fingers with me 🙂

But, my point is, when I first began sending my query, I thought it rocked. People who read it thought it rocked.

Agents didn’t.

When I sent my sample pages, I thought they rocked. People who read it thought they rocked.

Le sigh.

I’m slowly beginning to gain confidence in myself since a few gracious agents gave me some specific feedback and I literally rewrote a good 60% of the book based on that. A few of those wonderful agents have even asked me to resend my new pages.

Life is grand.

But obviously, when I started submitting, I wasn’t ready.

So, you tell me. How do you know when you’re ready???

One Week

Only one week and the kids are back to school. All of them.

What am I to do with myself?

I know–I’ll have uninterupted time to write 🙂 Well, after the school work is done, I guess…

Inspirational Mondays

Here’s another quote I adore. Especially when I get rejections in batches and begin to head on the downhill side of the roller coaster.

It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.

Theodore Roosevelt

I eventually, with the help of friends & family, get back to that semi-confident place of knowing that as long as I keep trying, one day, I will succeed. I will hold my fifth baby in my hands, a paperback of which novel I have no idea. Only hopes and dreams.

But it’s these hopes and dreams that keep me going.

Besides, I could never give up writing. Might as well keep trying to get paid for what I love to do anyway.
